Speaker: Popularity what is it made of? How does a person get to be popular with lots of people and have a few close friends too? Let’s watch and see what makes people like one person and not another.
Speaker 2: Hey Jerry, there is that new girl in our math class.
Jerry: Oh yes, her name is Caroline, she is just well kid.
Speaker2: Why, do you know her?
Speaker2: Not very well, I wish I did. I do not know what it is but there is something about her you like.
Speaker3: Well she always looks nice to start with.
Second person: Yeah, especially when you compare her with some of the weird characters in this place.
Speaker: Jenny thinks that she has the key to popularity, parking in cars with the boys at night when Jerry brags about taking Jenny out. He learns that she dates all the boys and he feels less important. What about Jenny does that make her really popular? Did the boys and girls like her, is she welcomed to join this group?
Kelly: Hi Betty, Billy.
Female speaker: You come to try here Jenny for a minute.
Jenny: Thanks. Say, Wally how is the place coming along.
Wally: Oh okay, Jenny. Here Jenny.
Speaker: Now girls who park in cars are not really popular. Not even with the boys they park with. Not when they meet at school or elsewhere.
Speaker2: Nothing like being Miss Popularity.
Audience: Yeah.
Alley: Meow, Meow.
Speaker: Okay Alley.
Speaker 2: Now there is a girl that would really get a man worked.
Alley: Let me ask her for a little help.
Audience: Okay, go ahead, go ahead right now.
Speaker: Now, why did they invite Caroline to join their group when Jenny was not welcomed? Is it because they like the way she looks and dresses, because she seems as interested in girl as in boys because they have heard no scandal about her.
Alley: I guess you know everybody, don’t you Caroline.
Audience: Hi Caroline.
Alley: I have seen you around. Betty I believe not to try and explain.
Caroline: Oh yes I was looking in for yesterday.
Alley: We are on it one way or another. I am on the costume committee.
Speaker2: And Jerry and I are state champs, two among are dozen or so.
Caroline: How about you Wally, where do you fit in all this?
Wally: Oh I am the one man team who does a job with no glory attached, I gather the props together and boy what a headache.
Caroline: You sound like you need a helper. Could I lend a hand?
Wally: Would you, I mean would you really?
Caroline: Sure, I would like it, I do not know anything about props but I could learn.
Alley: Oh, I will get some help too Caroline.
Wally: Hey, lay off I saw her first.
Wally: So we get to get together and talk over those props a little. Could you meet me backstage at 3:15?
Caroline: Oh that would be fine Wally.
Alley: See you in the rehearsal.
Speaker3: I think maybe I will take Caroline to the dance Saturday night.
Speaker2: Well better go ahead and ask her we could work out a double date.
Speaker3: Ah Saturday is soon enough.
Caroline: Hello, oh, hello Wally.
Wally: Hi, I was wondering if you would like to go to a strained and see a movie Saturday night and then go over to teen town maybe.
Carline: Well, Yes I.
Wally: Or if you would rather go with the gang on a skating party and weenie roast. We would have to leave earlier for that though but we get home at a decent time.
Caroline: Oh the skating sounds like a loads of fun.
Speaker: Wally has used a lot of common sense in putting the invitation this way, it shows that he has thought about what Caroline might like and he has implied his price range. So she will have some idea of what he can afford, when she makes her choice. Caroline likes it batter this way too, it is doing the girl no favor to leave it entirely up to her. It puts her on a spot.
Caroline: Alright Wally on Saturday at 5 pm. Bye.
Speaker: Well that phone call did not go on for hours. A pretty sensible attitude towards telephone conversations. Caroline keeps a date calendar. Not a bad idea. She will never have the embarrassment of forgetting a date or being ready an hour too late. That’s a good note to write to yourself any night, but especially when you are getting ready for a date.
Caroline: There you too can do a manicure Alley.
Alley: And I even know what to wear tonight, if I only knew dug up transportation to the dance.
Caroline: You sure need a phone here at my house?
Alley: I told him three times. I will have to be getting home to the dinner pretty soon. Take my advice think twice before you start going steady.
Caroline: Don’t you ever go out with anyone else at all don’t you go out with anyone else at all?
Alley: Nope.
Caroline: Well don’t you ever want to?
Alley: On nights like this I do. I never know what has planned, he just asked, “well you decide Alley”.
Caroline: I should think you got out of ideas.
Alley: Oh I am getting to that point.
Caroline: Hello, oh hello Jerry, oh the props are coming along alright.
Jerry: Well that is good, hey Caroline how about a date?
Caroline: Well I do not know Jerry, when did you have in mind?
Jerry: Well, what are you doing tonight?
Caroline: I am awfully sorry but I have a date for tonight Jerry. Tomorrow? No I am sorry, well call me early next week Jerry.
Jerry: Okay Caroline, thanks a lot just for saying. Goodbye.
Caroline: Can you imagine that Alley he wanted a date for tonight.
Speaker2: Sounds like you are asking her so late, went over like a lead balloon brother.
Jerry: Maybe so, well let’s see what else we can do about tonight.
Speaker: No it isn’t too promising for Jerry. But after all it is no compliment to any girl to call her so late, she thinks she is the very last resort and sometimes a girl likes a chance to get ready for a date.
Caroline: Hello Wally, come on in.
Wally: Hello yourself, see look at you, all ready and right on time too that’s a good deal.
Caroline: Thanks, Mother are you busy. I would like you to meet my father. Dad, this is Wally Johnson.
Speaker4: Well hello Wally.
Wally: How do u do Mr. Hames?
Female Speaker: Here I am darling, and I suppose this is Wally.
Wally: That is right Mrs. Hames, how do you do?
Female Speaker: Well it is nice meeting you.
Caroline: Oh, excuse me a second I forgot my scarf. I will be right there.
Wally: Do not let me interrupt Mr. Hames.
Speaker4: Thanks Wally. I was just looking into the world of avenge before we go to dinner.
Female Speaker: I took him and he is taking me out tonight. I understand you are having a little trouble with the props of the play.
Wally: Oh not too many now, much as I hate to admit it though, Caroline has sorted down a lot of things that we could not find any place.
Caroline: Here I am all set.
Female Speaker: Oh Caroline I made some brownies today. Maybe you would want to have some when you get back?
Caroline: There is enough in the ice box too isn’t there? How does that sound?
Wally: That sounds good. We will take you up on it Mrs. Hames. Thanks.
Speaker: Caroline and her mother have found one way a girl can repay a boy for entertaining her. A bite to eat at her house will save him money. Perhaps they will bring another couple home with them. That would be fun.
Wally: Folks no one will be at home.
Caroline: No.
Caroline: We will be home before 11 mother.
Speaker: Wally and Caroline have save the embarrassment of the argument about coming in at night, that was settled before Wally arrived. The hour was decided after considering such things as where Caroline and Wally are going on their date. Whether tomorrow is a school day and how many dates she has had recently.
Female Speaker: Do you have your key dear?
Speaker: The family knows that Caroline will stick to her word.
Female Speaker: All right have fun you two.
Wally: I will take good care of her Mrs. Hames, Bye.
Female Speaker: Bye.
Caroline: Goodbye
Wally: Goodbye.
Speaker: Wally felt at ease with Caroline parents and will be eager to return to her home. They liked him too. He was proud to be with Caroline because she looks well and is friendly with everyone and is considerate of their feelings. She likes him for these same reasons and also because he is fun to be with. Home parents and personality all help boys and girls to be popular.
