So on the Shimano system you have to make sure that the reservoir is level, and you open the reservoir. This is a reservoir cover. You take that off, and you top up the fluid, up to the top of the reservoir, making sure that you use mineral oil, ideally Shimano mineral oil for Shimano brakes, and you rubber band the hose onto the bag. You come down to your bleed fitting at the wheel. So clean off the bleed fitting after you pull off the little rubber cover, stick your piece of hose on, and take a Shimano spacer. You can open the system and you can see the fluid coming up. Squeeze the lever, open, tighten this down, open the lever, squeeze the lever, open the bleed fitting, tighten the bleed fitting, release the lever, and now you can see that the fluid level has dropped down, you fill it back up.
So this system is ready to ride. So Shimano recommends that when you bleed, rather than putting a spacer in between the pads, that you actually remove the pads, which involves pulling out this cotter pin and unscrewing this pin and pulling the pads up this way. Then replacing them with the spacer, so that's what it looks like when the spacer is in. So if you do that, then there is no way you can get any brake fluid on your pads when you are bleeding.
