I know from my experience last year, Dianne (ph) that when I coached a youth team for the first time, that catching and throwing, but more and more catching than anything was the hardest skill for the kids to learn and from my experience, 99% of the time the ball was on the ground and it's really, maybe gets kind of frustrating for kids sometimes, just trying to learn and maybe frustrating for the coach.
Certainly in high school, I think we're probably a lot like different strategies and you might have with somebody who is beginning like six-year-old player like Anna here. So, what would do with somebody who is just learning the catch?
Dianne: Yeah, I would love to show you, because I think that the most important thing is not to rush them; we take it really slowly, we take it through steps. So, I'm going to show you with Anna how we're going to do that. So, Anna, we're going to start and I'm going to teach you how to start learning how to catch.
So, the most important thing when we're learning how to catch is to give me a good target. So, I want you to push that stick out towards me, bottom hand and top hand, like that. See how that's a nice target and it's away from your head if you fall, holding it in here. If somebody throws that, you might hit you in the face. Turn a little bit this way Anna so he can see you better. There we go.
So, you're going to push it out towards me. You're going to keep your fingers again a little bit loose on that stick, bend and keep your elbow up. This is a lot to think about. We just keep correcting them over and over and you're going to stand this close and you are going to throw it. Anna, when this ball hits your stick, I just want you to come back. That's all. We're teaching them how to give with their stick and that is the first thing and that's all we're teaching. Beautiful!
I want you to have at least ten in a row before you go to the next step. Push it towards me, beautiful! Just lean it back just a little bit. Yeah, there we go. Good! When as soon as it hits, remember it just come back. There you go. Push it towards me again. Like that, there we go, and bring it back, oh! Excellent! Here we go. Push it up again, okay, and back.
When we get it back successful of about ten passes then we will take a step back and then do the same thing again and push that stick towards me, okay. Get it up a little higher because I don't want to hit your head. I really do ask to use that, put their sticks a little higher because a lot of times the girls are aiming and if the stick is too close to their head, they're going to be hit.
Remember, soft hands on there; you squeeze in your stick just soft fingers, beautiful. Now, I'm going to do a really easy underhand throw and just get back with it. Perfect! Again, remember, as soon as that ball hits, we're going to get back. I also like to take the ball and have them watch it all the way into their sticks. So, I'll just walk the ball. Anna, look at the ball, watch it all the way, keep your eyes on it, when it hits the stick, keep watching it till it's all the way in. That's how we catch.
Okay, so what are you going to do when I am passing you the ball, how you're going to hold your stick, show me. You're going to push it towards me. Okay, good! Get that bottom hand on so that stick isn't facing the ground. We never want our stick facing the ground; we want it up just a little bit. Go and push it more towards me. More and that bottom hand more, there you go.
You want to have them have their bottom hand out away from their body. Here we go, Anna. Let's start out fair enough. You've got to push it towards me, you always want their arm straight, it makes so much easier for them to give. Under hand, yeah! Look at that nice give, beautiful! Push it towards and one last, Anna, here we go.
Whenever we have more than one or two in a row that aren't successful, I move back and close, we want to have the use to have a lot of success. Push it back towards me, just hand on a little bit and there we go. Does that feel uncomfortable? Is it okay? Alright, here we go. Back in a little closer, there we go. Always having success, ten in a row, success, remove back and then back in. Excellent job, Anna, thank you.
