Male Speaker: Sirovasthi powered black gram or Urad dal is mixed with water and made into a sticky paste. Around one liter of the selected oil in this case Dhanwantharam thailam, is poured into a vessel. Then the mended Urad dal piece is moved back and forth till it looks snake like.
Now, after seating the patient comfortably on the chair, medicated oil is applied to his head and the leather cap is then placed on his head. Finally the cap is sealed well using a long piece of cloth. Cotton cloth is wrapped on the inner and outer edges of the rib of the cap. The mended black gram piece is placed inside the cap on the patient’s head to seal the cap from inside.
Simultaneously, the cap is sealed from the outside also to prevent leakage of the oil. After the oil is completely poured, the medicated oil is applied on to the rest of the patient’s body and a gentle massage is done.
Sirovasthi is very effective in eye, ear and nose diseases, chronic headaches, facial paralysis, spondylitis, insomnia, dryness of mouth and nose and numerous other diseases arising out of derived vata dosha. Once the oil temperature is normal, the oil is squeezed gently on to the head of the patient using a piece of cloth, taking care to see that it does not leak out or fall with too much pressure on the scalp.
After around 45 minutes or when the patient can taste the oil in his mouth, the oil and the cap are removed and the forehead is wiped dry with a towel. Oil is again applied to the head and then the patient is given a bath after which he is advised to take rest for at least an hour and then have some light food.
