How to do a Barrier Jumps Drill

Barriers Jumps Now let's show how hurdles and plyometric exercises can be directly used to develop tennis specific skills. The hurdles are again set up in a row of five, with two additional cones ten feet away, placed at 45 degree angles from the lines of hurdles. The area between these cones is where the partner stands, while the runner begins at the other end facing the first hurdle. Have the athlete jump forward over each hurdle as fast as possible and immediately upon landing, after the fifth hurdle, they are directed by the partner towards one cone or the other. Once they have mastered the basic movement of this exercise, add a racquet and have the partner feed balls. Now you have got a terrific high energy drill that stimulates a first volley after a split step.
