Well you may be noticed that I haven't talked too much about grip or stance yet, and that's always the starting point of every instructional series it seems. But I really wanted you to be crystal clear on the shape of swing and how it works first. Now, let's go ahead and take on that grip and stance for just a minute though.
Holding the club properly is an important element, because if you don't, the club face might not be in the right position, which makes a situation where you can make a really nice swing, good contact, but if the club face is looking one way or other then you still might get a bad shot. So, holding it correctly is going to be an important element here. Now, basically the way I would like to do this is to get in a habit of holding out in front of you when you make your grip. This way you can see where the club face is. So, when I go into the grip position like this it gives me a reference.
Many new golfers that I see they might be working very, very hard on their grip, they have got their thumb just so and they have got their hands just so and they are ready. And then they put their club down and they have to straighten that back out again. So, I want you to make sure you have a good reference from where to start from.
With the club straight out in front of you, I want you to put your left hand on such as that the club is resting just about in the fingers may be a little bit above the fingers of your left hand, if you will, and then you can wrap your hand right over the top so that your left thumb is on about 1 o'clock. If this is 12 o'clock, we are going to look to have the left thumb on 1 O'clock. That will create a situation where this little V will point between your right shoulder and right ear. This is going to keep you in the ballpark for the left hand position. Now, Paul Azinger likes to grip it this way Johnny Miller likes to grip that way. So, there is some room for individuality, but this will keep you in the ballpark to have that V pointing between your right shoulder and right ear.
Now, what you are going to do is you are going to take the two fingers here on the other hand and put it right up against this forefinger, so that this little finger wraps right on top like that. Now, you are going to close your hand over on top of this thumb, so that your like line right there rise right on top of the thumb like that. So, this other thumb, if you will, your right thumb is going to be on the other side of the shaft. So, the left thumb is on the right side the right thumb is on the left side over in this area here. Now the way I want you to think of this is you can think of your thumbs of being on the ones. So the way it works here is that with 12 o'clock here your left thumb is on 1 o'clock your right thumb is on 11 o'clock. You can also see there is not a big gap here between my knuckle and thumb; they are pretty close together there if not touching.
So. this is going to put you in the ballpark for your grip position. This V, if you will, on the right hand is also going to match very closely where the V on the left hand is. So that will set your hands in a good position, and with this club out straight like this as a starting point, you are going to be in a great shape for getting that grip in the right spot.
