How to do a Crossover and Lateral Combos Drill

The next logical progression is to combine the crossover and lateral steps in exercises to develop both speed and stride length to improve court coverage. The first exercise we are seeing develops an explosive first step to the ball. Our players first perform one exaggerated lateral step commonly known as a step out then an exaggerated crossover step. If they were hitting a ball in this three step footwork pattern as we see here, these steps would be the explosive first two steps before the last step to the ball. The next maneuver has our players working on the movement required for an explosive recovery after a ground stroke.

First we see our athletes performing one exaggerated crossover step then an exaggerated lateral step and in real play, the crossover and lateral combo would look this. The goal of the player is to explode with each movement trying to achieve good distance on each recovery step.
