The fact is that the transition from a left-handed forehand to a two-handed backhand is quite easy. Step one is to hit the lefty forehand.
Step two is to place the right hand on the bottom of the grip, but hold the grip with only the thumb and the index finger, since the two-hander is hit largely with the dominant left hand. Take a look.
Here Colindy(ph) is hitting with two hands, but because the right hand is acting like a hitchhiker just going along for the ride, the left hand is forced to do most of the work.
The final step is to have Colindy place her entire right hand on the grip, but keep it relaxed to maintain the feel that the left hand is doing most of the work. Of course, Colindy makes it look easy. Since she has been hitting these shots for nearly two years, when we film this part of the series.
If you need to help a beginner, get an initial feel for the lefty or non-dominant hand forehand, please go through the steps outlined in the third show of this series called Beginner Forehand. It clearly lays out all you need to know about the swing, the spin and the footwork of this shot.
I also need to raise a question at this time. It's really important, namely what type of grip is held with the right or dominant hand with the two-handed backhand. With my own daughter it was interesting how this issue really took care of itself. Take a quick look at how it unfolded.
Since we started Colindy out hitting backspin on both sides as clearly explained in volume one in this series, she naturally adopted a Continental or Hammer grip with her dominant hand. This also help to get a rapid feel for the volley as you will see in later programs in this series.
Colindy became so comfortable with this grip that when she hit her two-handed topspin backhand, the right hand naturally slid into this position. Even though, it was not the dominant hand, hitting the two-hander. The tremendous benefit of this grip is that when a two-hander has to release and hit a one-handed shot, there is no grip change to worry about with the right or dominant hand. For Colindy, this may transitions from two hands to one very easy.
