How to do a Tag Races Drill for Tennis Players

Following drills will help players to develop the important areas of starting ability acceleration, stride rate and stride length. You will also note that we are not using tennis balls in the live ball situation in the following drills, but after working with these specific aspects with your players, make sure to get them to apply them and into live ball situations as quickly as possible.

Let's begin this section with a fun group of games and drills called Tag Races. The first one calls for one athlete to start in a pushup position on the baseline and the other behind them at the back fence. Their coach blows a whistle and both players sprint with the back player trying to catch up with and tag the front player before they reach the net. Another option is to perform the same exercise, but with the front player sitting down at the beginning.
