How to do a Tennis Wall-Ball Drill

Now let's move to a series of drills that can really help reactions at the net. The first variation of what we call, Wall Ball, is for one athlete to stand about eight feet away from a wall and toss and catch an agility ball against the wall with two hands and then with just the right hand, and then just the left. Notice that these exercises can use a number of different balls. Depending on the age and ability of the athlete, a basic progression is to start with a tennis ball.

Then a rock ball which is just slightly unpredictable. More difficult still, will be a zigzag ball and the most challenging will be the popular agility ball. Once a player can handle this exercise with self tossing, add a little fun by having them work with a partner and at the most exciting level, use a racquet and have the athlete volley the feet back against the wall.
