To look pretty, lay them out to get them on fastest like glasses, helmets, socks, if necessary, race number belt and so on. Have your items laid out in the order you plan to use them. From the front of your towel towards the back. Put things you must wear like your race number belt in a place that is highly visible. So you won’t leave without it.
Here are some things to avoid in transition, sit down. This takes too much time and may cause cramping when you get up. Eat or drink, do it out on the road instead of giving away distance to others. Put on clothing; unless it is extremely cold you should already have on your race outfit under your wet suite. Wear socks in sprint distant races. In races over 10k socks are recommended as taking ten seconds to get them on is better than running miles with blisters.
Matt Reed: My biggest tip for transition is to keep things simple, you need simpler things you don’t get confused. Just when you come out of water, you are disoriented you just want to get your helmet on and go. And when you come back in on in the block, just put your running shoes on and go, you grab your hat or whatever. But just keep things simple and it will be the fastest way.
Speaker: Section two Swim To Bike Transition.
Near the end of the swim, you should be thinking about what you need to do to prepare to run to your bike. Consider using your legs a little more by kicking in the last hundred meters with the swim. So your legs will have broadened them when you stand up. Begin running with small quick steps instead of big slow ones. If you are wearing a wet suite unzip it immediately even before pulling off your cap or goggles, so you can use both hands to pull upper part of your wet suite off.
If you want to be sure not to lose your cap and goggles consider putting them in one hand before pulling the second sleeve of your wet suite off. Then let go of them as you pull your arm out of the suite and they will be trapped in the arm for easy removal sometime after the race.
Once at the bike, finish taking off your wet suite and start getting on your glasses and helmet. Remember your helmet must be buckled at all times while in contact with the bike. Put on bike shoes in the transition area only if necessary, it’s faster to run bare foots with the bike mount line and get the shoes on during the first part of ride. Run to the bike mount line taking --
