In this segment, we are going to take a look at the wide range of motion that the wrist needs to serve well. Just take a look with just the wrist snap what you can get on the ball. Pretty good acceleration because the wrist is the essence of a good serve.
The key to this range of motion is the hand position on the grip. Take a quick look. The Frying Pan Grip offers a range of motion in the wrist a little more than 90 degrees. But with the Continental or Hammer grip, the range of motion literally can double. A simple point that makes a really profound difference.
Let's take a look at Colindy's(ph) serve and then we will cover and demonstrate step by step how we got there. In this next sequence, Colindy is hitting second serves on the baseline. I am a believer in building confidence. So after nine month of playing we are actually just now getting her to experiment with harder first serves. For months our focus has been a full motion with a modest amount of spin and arc.
To give her a feel for the rhythm and balance of the serve, we have spent about ten minutes in each session to develop a solid foundation. Colindy's technique is now solid enough. To allow her to gradually improve is much as her desire and potential will take her.
Now let's review the stages it took to build this foundation. A good starting point is with the throwing motion.
