The next logical step is to start two children facing one another, each standing in their own ladders. Then, on command, have them walk through the ladder, tossing the ball back and forth at the same time.

For a team competition, create a relay and just instruct the children that they have to toss and catch the ball in each individual rung of the ladder before they can proceed.

If they drop a ball have them repeat the toss and catch, standing in the same position.
