Lying down with your legs up the wall is one of the most magical restorative poses of all. Sit at the edge of your mat with your hips near the wall and your legs bent. Roll on to your back and your legs will move up onto the wall. If your hamstrings are very tight, you just move back a little bit farther away from the wall.
Now bend your elbows and use your head and arms to press back into the floor so you can lift the bottom tips of your shoulder blades up into your heart. Keep a curve in your neck, close your eyes and relax, breathe normally. As you stay in this position, all the blood will drain down from your feet and legs and move towards your heart and lungs, where it will be cleansed.
This pose is physically and emotionally very restful. When you stand up from it, you will feel completely refreshed, breathe gently and normally. Allow yourself to let go. Staying in this pose for anywhere from 5-10, even 20-30 minutes can be a big boost for your immune systems. Not only does it refresh and restore the circulation of your blood, this particular position is very conducive to settling into a quiet space in the mind.
Learning to let go of thoughts that keep us busy and anxious. Soften, learn to surrender. Let go of control. Let yourself relax physically, mentally, and emotionally. Staying in this pose will actually help you make up for lost sleep. It will improve your mood. Treat yourself to this form of relaxation often. Enjoy the peacefulness and the stillness.
