The Six-Count Basic Step
Male: This is what a six-count looks like.
Female: The six-count basic.
Male: It goes like this, six, seven, eight, slow—
Female: Step, step, rock, step, step, step, rock, step.
Male: Or a slow, slow, quick, quick, slow, slow, quick, quick, side.
Female: One, two, three, four, five, six, side, side, rock, step.
Male: Let us break that down. First, we will go back to the side to side which is a slow, slow but we are going to stop and start at the same time. Gentlemen, you will always going to start on your left in dancing.
Female: And ladies we always start on our right.
Male: because in swing dancing it is easy to remember the woman or to follow is always right. So let us listen to the music and try starting and stopping at the same time.
Five, six, seven, eight—
Female: Step, step, step, step, step, step, step, step.
Male: Okay, let us start again, five, six, seven, eight—
Female: Step, step, step, step, step, step, step, step.
Male: Okay, the next two beats of the basic are the rock step.
Female: Ladies we are going to rock back on to our right foot. We are going to place it right behind our left foot, not too far back and change our weight totally onto that foot and then rock back into your left foot. And for leaders, it is the opposite, you rock back into your left, change your weight totally and then rock back onto your right foot.
Male: It looks like this, here we go, rock step. Again we go rock step. Do not make it too big of a rock step because if you cross over behind or if you totally shift your weight completely back you are not going to be back in time for one of the six-count beat. Let us try it from behind a few times. Here we go—
Female: Rock step.
Male: One more time.
Female: Rock step.
Male: Let us put the whole thing together with the music. So it goes, five, six, seven, eight—
Female: Side, side, rock step, step, step, rock step, step, step, rock step—
Male: One, two, three, four, five, six. One, two, three, four, five, six.
Female: rock step, step, step, rock step, step, step, rock step.
Male: Let us doing it from behind, five, six, seven, eight—
Female: Step, step, rock step, step, step, rock step, step, step, rock step, step.
Male: Now that is your swing basic. Practice it a lot because that is going to become part of your muscle memory to really enjoy this dance. That is where you are going to spend the most of your time practicing.
