Hello! I am Robert Cramp, welcome to the experiment of the week.
This time we are going to do a classic science experiment that uses the science of inertia. I am sure you have all seen on TV where someone grabs the table cloth and jerks it out from one of the dishes and it really does work, if you do it right, if you know the science.
To know the science, we have to understand inertia. Inertia tells us that in order for an object to move, something has to push or pull on in, and the heavier that object is the more force you need to push or pull to get it to move.
So if you are doing this, we want to use that is something nice and heavy. Do not try doing this with a plastic cup, just to light. It is too easy for it to move.
We place it on something that is nice and smooth, I have here a piece of cloth, notice that it has not been hemmed, if it is been fold over and soam that is an edge to the cloth that can catch on the bottom and cause it to fall.
You can also do it with a sheet of news paper because it is nice and smooth as well. The last thing, you are going to pull one quick motion down, not upward. You have got to be confident. You got to know that it is going to work because if you are timid, if you pull gently, you transfer enough energy to the vase to make it move.
Instead, we want to be confident. We want one quick snap, so that we do not transfer enough energy to the vase to cause it slide away.
Now, if you are going to try this, do not use the good china, it make a time or two to practice.
Use something that does not matter if it falls in to floor and breaks, but again, remember, it has to be heavy, if you are going to use a plastic container, put some water or something in it to give some weight.
