Hello, friends. My name is Ravi Arora and I want to talk about mentoring today.
Now, a mentor is a role model, a guide. A mentor has been there before. He’s the head of the game. He’s had a lovely experience so when he mentor someone or guide someone, support someone, he can do it because he has already faced the problem the student is facing. His already hit the brick wall the student has faced.
So he can offer solutions in creative way to overcome the obstacle the student may actually face in the business that he is in or whatever position he is in his life because the mentor or the role model has done it and succeeded and move on and it’s very important to the role model themselves and as a mentor themselves that they continue to learn and grow because then they can pass on the experience, the wisdom and knowledge to the student and the mentee that are following them.
But it is also very important that the mentor themselves acts as a channel for feedback because sometimes the student knows more than the mentor and the knowledge and experience the student can give the mentor can be invaluable. There’s always something a mentor can actually learn.
But the honest thing is that the student will always hang onto almost every word the mentor is actually saying. So it’s very important as a mentor that what you give your student is quality and practical. Something that they can actually be done not some hair grained solution which you just come up with. But some which is very practical and some of that’s actually being done, something that you have done and they risk a solution to it.
Now if you don’t have a solution or you don’t know then say it because otherwise the student will go away and try and then come back to you very disappointed and may actually lose faith in you and trust in you. It’s very, very important.
So a role model must give information which is true and it works probably say sometimes doesn’t always work because many of the student misinterpreted what you’re saying. But you must always be there, have the right solution for the right problem because sometimes you can give a solution which is so wipe out that again, the student will lose trust and faith in you so it’s really very important to be honest in what you are saying.
So if you don’t know, say “I don’t know” and come back to the student and say “I will come back to you and I will find out how we can do it.” Because the role models themselves, they mentor themselves have mentor themselves who they can ask, who may come across this problem.
So as a role model and as a mentor here, you have great responsibility to your student because at the end of the day, the student themselves become mentors to other people. So the quality you will give then becomes the benchmark for the students themselves and they will then continue with that benchmark. So if you love the benchmark then the quality you’re giving out there will also be reduced.
It’s very, very important to stress your integrity, your honesty and be able to receive feedback and continue to grow and learn as an individual which you can then pass onto from you to the student. Now, with mentoring and role modeling you actually find that your student will progress faster so and you will actually help them improve their performance and effectiveness.
If you continue to communicate with them, it’s very, very important that you communicate with them very effectively and as often as is needed. Now you don’t want the student also to become too dependent because they will always rely on you. But you must be there when they call you. You must return their phone calls, you must e-mail them, you must be there for them because otherwise again, the student will lose their trust and faith in you if you don’t come back to them, if you don’t reply to them.
So as a mentor, you have great responsibility so it’s very, very important that when you start mentoring, when you create your following that you have all these things have mentioned in line and you will find not only will the student grow with the experience so will you.
So if you want to know more about mentoring, how to improve your performance, how to improve your business then give me a call.
