You certainly see all the problems that are being caused here with this one length of duct.
The duct boot has actually fallen away from the sub-floors so we have to secure that up in the position, that way allowing the air to flow directly up into the register into the room. But look at the duct tape here on the seams—it is all dried and loose, allowing the air to leak around the seams.
Now to hold the boot up in the place, I going to take a piece of 1 x 3 strapping, one foot long, put it right beside the boot and screw it to the underside of the sub-floor. Then I can go up inside and screw it through the boot into the lumber #3 strapping holding the boot in place.
And now we want to tape around the perimeter of the boot, therefore allowing no leakage whatsoever at the point where the hot air boot meets the underside of the sub floor.
You can see here with the duct tape is got so dry that it just fallen away from the duct. And the reason for that, one inch tape is just not adequate because it has not been right over the entire seam and the warm air coming out around the seam drying the duct tape out and thus falling away.
So we will remove that and put on two-inch tape, that way we got a good seam cover and we would not have that problem. Now as you can see here, the ducts are in the roll but also the duct dampers are in the roll and that is not always the way that it should be because inside that duct, the damper can either be fully opened or closed or whatever area that is required in order to deliver the correct amount of the air.
Now to adjust the control, very simply, release the wing knot and then you can turn the control arm here of the duct damper and control the amount of air flow. Now you can see there all kinds of air flow in there now, in fact, there is even more than what is necessary for the dining room. Now what I am going to do is go down in the basement and adjust the damper.
There you have it—I have adjusted the damper to about 40% reduction of air flow, getting a nice even flow here at the register into the dining room not causing any drafts.
