Hello and welcome to the learning, how to fly in Second Life Tutorial. The over all purpose of this tutorial is to learn how to fly and use the flying feature in Second Life.
In order to accomplish this you will look in two objectives. The first one if to learn how to start flying and move about once in the air, well the second one is learn how to stop flying and return safely to the ground.
Once you are in the Second Life interface you may notice that like most other features in Second Life you can accomplish flying in a variety of ways. I have taken a snapshot of this screen because I want to illustrate one key way that we use to fly in Second Life. If you look in the upper right-hand corner of the screen you will see a little gray box that has eight arrows and a little button that says Fly. This will be the first method that we can use to fly while in Second Life.
We will switch now to a live shot of Second Life and as you can see I am using the gray box in the upper right-hand corner, selecting the Fly button which shows me that since I am on the ground, if I push it once I will start to hover in the air, and if I want to come back down all I need to do is hit that button again. I am going to press the button the third time now to go back up into the air and now I can take a look at the other eight arrow keys.
If I want to move vertically upward or downward, those are the two arrows just to the left of the Fly button. Since what I want to do right now is just move closer to the boat, I am going to press the arrow button right in the center, little-by-little just like I move closer to the boat.
Now I want to move vertically upward, may be so I can get a better view of the horizon. I do want to caution you whoever, that because I am so high up. If I press the Fly button again it does adversely affect my health.
Another method of moving around in Second Life and one that I find especially useful while flying is using the Keyboard. More specifically the Page Up, Page Down and Arrow keys.
If you press the Page Up key once you will see that I jump up into the air. However, if I hold down the Page Up key, I begin to hover and indeed fly.
If I want to come back down all I need to do is hold down the Page Down key. Like I just press, I am going to even hold it down.
So now I am going to go back up into the air using the Page Up key and I can use the Arrow keys to move forward, backwards or even side-to-side as I am moving in one direction or another. I am going to use the Page Down key to come back down safely to the ground.
A final method of flying in Second Life is very similar to the first method. In fact, if you look at the bottom of the screen you can see that there is a little Fly tab. Pushing that once, as I just did, allows me to fly up into the air and now I can use any combination of the Arrow keys, Page Up or Down or the box in the upper right-hand corner of my screen to move about the Second Life interface. So it's really nice that I can use any combination and accomplish the same thing.
At this point I'd like to take some time and review the three methods that we discussed that help us to fly in Second Life. The first method is to use the on-screen buttons which are available via the flying box which on my screen was in the upper right-hand corner. Remember that within that box the button that's labeled Fly will either allow you to start flying if you are on the ground or will bring you back down to the ground if you're already in the air. You do need to be careful though because if you press that button while you are in the air and you are too high up, it will adversely affect your health.
The other eight arrow key buttons that are within that box are used to either move vertically up or down, front or back or side-to-side.
The second method that we can use which is the one that I prefer is to use the Page Up and Page Down buttons along with the Arrow keys on the Keyboard. I find this to be more useful because you are not constantly using your Mouse. The Page Up key allows you to move vertically up, the Page Down key vertically down, and the arrow keys front to back or side-to-side.
The last method which is very similar to the first is to simply use the Fly button that's at the bottom of the page. With this, as with all the methods you can use any combination. You can use some of the keys on the screen or you can use the arrow keys, the Page Up or Page Down. It's really a nice feature that allows you to use any combination of methods in order to accomplish the same goal.
I hope you found this tutorial helpful, I gave you a little insight and to how to fly in Second Life.
