What we want to do now, again in a fielding position from any position, from third base, from shortstop, from second base, we want to make sure that we get the best jump on the ball as possible. We have to be able to call light on our feet. If we were just standing in a position, waiting for the ball, hit the plate or waiting for the batter to hit the ball, when it reaches the plate, we are going to be in a flat foot position.
So there are several ways you can do this. Everybody is different, everybody has their own technique. Once you move back, and let's see your approach on this. As the pitch goes in, you are going to notice that he is going to be setting himself. He is going to use a 1-2-3 approach for his particular start on this. When he lands, when his front foot lands on three, the pitch will be reaching the plate.
Once again, are we set? The pitch is up and it's in, and he is set, right as the pitch, he has laid on his feet. One other technique that we can use here, some players they count it out. They are very relaxed, and on the pitch they are going to jump. It is just a simple jumping move as the ball hits the plate. Very good! Now again, he does a 1-2 jump, and that's fine.
Some people like to approach it like a cat as the pitcher is winding up or getting right to the plate. He is going to take one or two steps forward, and then take this little jump and he is ready to go. But once again, the importance here or getting ready is to be light on your feet, weight on the balls of your feet, balance, and you are ready to jump left, right, or charge the ball if possible.
