This month is June. Those of you who are not particularly interested in grafting can change video now, go watch something else and I know a few of you are interested in grafting you even tried it yourself. So, just a follow up on the grafts I did a little while ago that I showed you. This as you recall is a raw here rather called Suntan. I’ll say a little bit more about that particular variety later. A brilliant apple, is long keeper, very highly flavored and anyway, the apples here we have grafted over where all the different variety could interact which is really good that we’ve got enough of them.
This variety which is called Suntan, I wanted more of this and so I grafted this. This is our Suntan and this is some caramel not a very highly flavored like keeping up. But we did not have enough of we could not go enough to satisfy our customers. So this again has been grafted over and now it’s done, more as good as the best.
This is a double rind graft. You see the other one is doing well, the other one is barely alive it may not survive. In fact if this one doesn’t survive, this goes very well that would be okay and God-willing I would show you next year and the year after how that’s grown. It’s another doing all right. It seems the rind graft there going well, not a single rind growing well.
This is of interest here. This is a bit of growth that’s coming away from the original tree but as it happens this branch is growing as what you can see a very good angle to balance the tree. So probably what I’ll do is leave this let it grow in and next year I’ll graft that over but most of this growth that’s coming from the old tree needs to be removed and frankly the earlier you remove it the better because obviously it’s just going into and it’s taking up space. And if you neglect to do this job when you should do it then you will ultimately be left with them to allow you to form the ripeness that you don’t want growing up together with the graft that you don’t want.
But this one, you might remember curiously why I shown you this hasn’t grown very well and I tell you why I don’t know. Possibly, I made a mistake by cleft grafting that it seems 2-1/2 to 3 centimeters across and maybe that’s just a bit too thick in successful cleft grafting.
I made also the rind grafting and what I have done into the rind grafting is not very well here and it’s another one. It’s not doing bad at all by the top of rind graft. If this both grow extremely well what I’ll probably do next year is just nip off one of them and if they are one growth it’s actually advantageous. I believed this is balance to let them both grow away this year but if they’re growing very well then in the late winter or early spring over at 2010 I’ll probably cut one of those two ways so we get one big branch here and here’s some more.
Some of the other rind graft is actually seem to have done better in some ways than the clefts which is interesting. We’re learning over time hopefully.
