This episode is brought to you by AwesomeDrinks.com, where the best drinks begin.
Derrick : Welcome to Common Man Cocktails. I’m your host, Derrick Schommer. Today, we’re going to make the Bubblegum Sundae. This is kind of a sweet, semi-sweet style of drink. It’s going to have a little grenadine, a little peach schnapps, I love peach schnapps, lots of banana, Creme de Banana. Creme de Banana and three ounces OJ. This is my little kind of ghetto container. I didn’t want to bring the big container so that’s—I really got to get a small little cutie little ones.
We’re going to use a highball glass for this drink, so you are going to get a nice delicious taste. Also check out our sponsor, AwesomeDrinks.com that sells these cool Collins glasses. Alright, so let’s start building this drink. We’re going to first start with the Crème de Banana, with two ounces of Crème de Banana. This is a shake and drink, we got lots of Crème de Banana in this drink. I haven’t done it on—has had two ounces, I don’t think. Correct me if I’m wrong. And peach schnapps, one ounce. Personally, I like both these ingredients, so this was a no brainer. Peach schnapps goes in so many drinks and I never had on that I did not like. Throw it in champagne, you’ve got yourself a party.
And again, we’ve been using this a lot. This is the Crème de Banana specifically, because we’ve had people say, “Hey, I bought the Crème de Banana for a couple of the recipes, what else do you suggest?” If you’ve got a suggestion for a liquor that you use a lot or you’d like to use a lot, you just can’t think of any good recipes, let me know and I’ll try to focus on it for a few episodes to really build up an archive so you can make use of those alcohols.
We’re going to do three ounces of just orange juice, that’s a pretty common household item. And there, what you have is what looks to be orange juice. Throw some ice. We’re going to use the grenadine at the end. That’s more for effect.
Hey, get in there. So that—it looks refreshing already. I’m pretty happy, but let’s shake it up. A little water there. Shake it.
Yeah, hear all that ice break. In case you’re wondering, some people love that searching around, how long do you shake your glass? Ten seconds is usually good enough if it gets the ice really—the ice is your energy of the drink, so you really want to get your drink cold, super charged, might super charge. First, ice in your glass.
I t’s really—you don’t want to pour the ice in here into the glass if you’re—I used to do that but I’ve changed my ways. And the reason is this, ice is nice and fresh, this ice is crushed up and kind of melted. And you want to keep that, hold that back from the drink. That way, the drink stays cold. If you’re making it for yourself that—it’s a matter of personal opinion, I sometimes just dumped it in. But if you’re making for other people, you want it to be at the perfect temperature so that they can feel—I don’t know, like you are an awesome cocktail maker. You are making it at home, you’re a great cocktail enthusiast, you’re a lovely friend, they want to come over more. I can keep going. There you go.
Now I’m saying it before, I’m going to say it again. That my friends looks like, what? Tequila Sunrise? Come on, looks like a Tequila Sunrise, it does! It’s the same. It looks like a Tequila Sunrise, but it’s not a Tequila Sunrise because there’s no tequila here. That’s one reason. But it’s get colors in banana.
Female: It’s the strawberry from the sundae.
Derrick: Strawberry—but it’s a bubblegum sundae. Is that the bubblegum? Oh maybe it’s like the secret bubblegum. Like you ever get those—
Female: Stay at the bottom.
Derrick: The bottom, that plastic cone shaped ice cream has a little crazy candy thing. That was good, it was a bubblegum.
Female: Uh-hum.
Derrick: It was a bubblegum. So consider that the bubblegum. This actually started to make more sense, I never been envisioned it this way. So, just picture that sound of that little ice cream truck that drives by that plays the same song, they did like 25 years ago.
It smells like peaches, which is weird because there’s more this and that. But it rings right through. This is really—it’s hard to explain. It tastes like a bubblegum candy, like the fake artificial flavor bubblegum, I don’t really know many other bubblegum that’s real, like it’s all artificial. So you’re going to get that artificial taste, but it’s like a childhood taste.
Female: Like Bazooka Joe?
Derrick: Like a Bazooka Joe. Yes, like—yes, like the strawberry Bazooka Joe. But there’s no—I don’t know, that’s what it kind of—it feels like. If you’re into something new, then I’m warning you right now. This is more of a sweet drink, you’re not going to get a lot of sours, you know there’s no limes, lemons, crazy citrus is in here, just the orange juice. Orange juice is pretty sugary. This is sweet, not over the top super sweet night. I don’t know why. You would think it would be because there’s no like crazy normal alcohol to bring it down. Definitely, a little above average sweet but so relaxing and refreshing.
I had one last night, now is—I mean you really taste because I drank it so quickly. I was supposed to kind of get my teasing nose ready. It just went right down. So that’s the dangerous point. This will go down really fast and tasty. So if you’re looking for something, I would consider this more of an after dinner drink then beforehand because of the sweet factor. It doesn’t really do anything—I don’t know, I just sense I would want this after dinner.
So there you go. That’s the Bubblegum Sundae. You might want to make a double size because this is really good. I’m your host, Derrick Schommer. We’re teaching you how to drink.
