Max Power: Hello! Thanks for joining us today, this is Max Power with wtfradiolive.com, today is the very first in a series of bartender tips, this is called -- uh I guess Max Power’s Bartender Tips or wtfradiolive.com bartender tips well, how you want to call it, we will think of a name, we will let you know.
Anyway, what we are going to start out with today is something very elementary, very dear to my heart, one of my favorite drinks it's the American Style Black and Tan. There are a number of styles of Black and Tans but basically the American style is what I prefer and what it's kind of what I consider to be a Classic Black and Tan and it's made with Bass Premium Ale and Guinness.
Now what are you going to need for any Black and Tan not just the American Style Black and Tan, the components are. One good type glass, okay, obviously you are going to need your Ale in this case like I said we are using Bass and no Black and Tan can be made high and low without Guinness. Okay, so here is what we are going to do.
First thing you need for every Black and Tan is a spoon, now you can buy these from the market, you could I guess order it online, or we can google Black and Tan spoon. I am sure you can come with one, or you can just do what I did and what most people do, get yourself a Soup Spoon, one of these nice round soup spoons, okay.
Then we are going to bend it like this, you see how it's bent with this S curve. Now what this does here, this curve right here fits over the edge of the glass and this little dip here keeps it from running back down the handle of the spoon all over onto your table. So it's going to fit like this right here, alright.
Let's get started. First thing we are going to do, we are going to take on Bass or whatever kind of the Ale you want to use, a pinch, pretty much any Ale will do although I would not myself want to use anything about Bass. You're going to take your glass, you are going to pour, one-half a glass of Bass Ale trying to keep the head to a minimum everyone knows this trick, every guy who has been in the college knows the trick of tilting the glass on the edge, keep the head down, of course most college guys don’t think head is a bad idea, alright. I am going to pour a little more now. There we go, pour more than half a glass, but that will do. Okay now, open up our somewhat bartender.
We are going to take our spoon, we are going to lay it over the edge and here is the important part, pour it over the spoon so that it comes down in sort of an umbrella like fashion and kind of rolls down the edges of the inside glass, here we go. Get them correctly you will get a beautiful separation, that dark-brown Guinness just hanging out on the top and the golden Ale separated from it on the bottom of the glass. See what we get.
You know the thing I love about Guinness is the character of it the way when you pour it in glass you get that cascade of bubbles that just roll down the inside of the glass. I am going to show you that in a moment, another thing I love about Guinness is the delicate creamy edge it has.
Okay, we are going to give you a -- alright, now can you all see that? That is what you want, this is the perfect Black and Tan and I am going to go ahead and enjoy that.
Thank you for joining us. This is Max Power with wtfradiolive.com and come back and see us again.
