The most basic element that we all must learn to begin with is called the single stroke. And the single stroke is very simple. It goes right-left, right-left, and I’ll demonstrate it right now on my snare drum [Demonstration]. That is the single stroke.
What one should do in learning the single stroke is to begin very slow, gradually go to your top speed, and then gradually return to the slow speed you started with. My top speed is relatively high compared to beginners, so try and imagine when you feel tension in your arms, that’s when you back off no matter how slow your top speed is when you begin. I’ll demonstrate.
For beginner, top speed is somewhere around here [Demonstration] if you’re lucky. So you want to start really slow [Demonstration] and watch as I gradually increase to let’s say a beginner’s top speed [Demonstration]. Notice how I gradually slowed back down to my original speed.
That is the best way to practice the single stroke. If you do this everyday for let’s say a week or two, you’re going to notice a drastic improvements in your top speed and it’ll start looking more like this [Demonstration]. The single stroke.
