How to play Blues, Guitar Hammers and Pull Offs
Hello! Welcome to this new segment in you E-course. And in today’s mini video guitar lesson, we are going to move away from the subject to chords slightly because up until this point, we have doing a fairly basic stuff. I have taught you how to tune a guitar, I have taught you how to read tab, and we have also learned some chords and some strumming patterns. But today, we are really going to step up a gear. And especially if you are in electric guitarist and you want to be a lead guitarist. If you are into rock or blues, or if you are a guitarist like Eric Clapton, B.B Kings, Santana, or really any of the modern rock groups. Then I think this is going to be particularly relevant to you. I think you really are going to enjoy this lesson. But do not get me wrong. It is perfectly valid on acoustic guitar as well. So everybody must join in with this.
So today, I am going to show you what is called the Blue scale. And a scale, all that means is a group of notes and you play them one at a time. And it sounds like this. But I can absolutely promise you that it is vital that you learn this notes and it is vital that you program your fingers with this pattern of notes because it would be the basis and the foundation on which you learn to improvise and so, and play all the wicked guitar stuff that you want to play. If you want to be able to do stuff like this.
And cool stuff like, then you actually need to learn this scale, okay, are you sold? Good, alright, so let us begin. I want you to start by putting your first finger on the 6th string of fret five and give that a pluck. And then move up to the little finger on the 6th ring of fret eight. Now, I will ask you to use the exact fingers is all I ask you to use because it will be more efficient in the long run.
So once you have done fret five and then fret eight, go to the 5th string of fret five. And then go to the 5th string of fret seven. And notice that I am using my third finger on fret seven. So, if we play from the start, it will look like this. And I get to the fourth string of fret five, and then fret seven, and then the third string is the same as fret five and fret seven. And now, when you get to the second string, I want you to play fret five and then fret eight with a little finger. And then the first string, fret five and then fret eight also with a little finger.
So I will demonstrate to you again now. 6th string follows with an eight, 5th string follow with seven, 4th string, five and seven. First string five and seven. Second string, five and eight. And then the first string, five and then eight. Good excellent, so I will just play that with full speed.
Now once you have done that and memorize it, what I want you to do is to play it backwards. So what I mean is, to start on the first string of fret eight and then step off to fret five on the first string. So we are going to descend all the way back down. So the second string now of fret eight off to the second string of five. Third string at seven, third string at five, fourth string at seven, fourth string at five, fifth string at seven. And then five, sixth string at eight, and then five. So you should be able to get all the ways through the blue scale and all the way back again.
Now, I have said this to you before, I will say it again. It is not a race. Do not worry about playing this really fast straight away. It is perfectly normal for you to stop the video, practice it for 10 minutes. And if you need some more of video over and over again, then it is perfectly fine to do that as well. So at this stage, I will assume you have memorized this now because really, it is quite straight forward. I think you will agree.
Now the next technique, this is the next part of the equation. I am going to teach you to hammer and pull off. And this is the key to be able to it fast. If you like that little technique that I just did just now, when I was kind of showing off, I will can promise you that the secrets of that not only is, understanding and remembering the scale but to be ab
