That of course is the Deep Purple’s Smoke on the Water. This is a very basic guitar lesson, this is one of the first songs that we ever learned as a guitar player and if you’ve never played your guitar before ever at all even just within a couple minutes, I can show you how to play the song because it’s that easy.
We’re going to break it down and just a couple of small steps and one thing you should know it’s a two string song. It listed the main riff what we’re going to do today and what we do is we work with the two innermost middle strings of the guitar. If you start in with the top string and call down the first string, the very skinny small one we call that our first string. The next one is our second and the third one right there, that’s our G-string then our 4th string, is the D string. So we’re going to play the 3rd string and the 4th string, we just pinch these two together, you see that? That’s all we do, we just use those two strings. So part one let’s take a look and see what we do here. The first note we’re going to play is the open string, the 3rd string open G. Then for right now we’re just going to use our first finger and later on at the end of the lesson I’ll show you how to use different fingers to make it more official. So just using our 1st finger, this is what we’re going to do we‘re going to play the open string here, the 3rd string, the G-string then the next note is our 1st finger on the 3rd fret. Then we slide off two frets to the 5th fret. So that’s part one, let’s review. Open, 3, 5, we’ll do it one more time open, 3, 5.
Now part two is very similar, we say open, 3 then we’ll go up to the 6th fret, 6th let me just move down one to the 5th, 5. Let’s review part two. Open 3, 6, 5. Now let’s put part one and part two together. Part one, open 3, 5, part two open 3, 6,5. Part three open 3, 5 and then part four we just say open. So let’s review, part one open 3, 5, part two open 3, 6, 5. Part three open 3, 5, part four 3, open and you let that ring.
The next thing to do is to play the exact same pattern that we just did which we just played in the G-string. We’re going to play the exact same pattern now on the D string on the 4th string on the string right here. Okay, let’s do this again but now on the 4th string. Open, 3, 5 that’s part one, part two, open, 3, 6, 5. Let’s put those two together, open, 3, 5 part two open, 3, 6, 5. Here’s part three, open 3, 5 and part four, 3, open. Let’s play that again. Open, 3, 5 part two open, 3, 6, 5. Here’s part three, open 3, 5 and part four, 3, open and you just let that ring.
Now as you can see this is pretty easy, now we early call as the tricky part but it’s probably the hardest part is what we’re going to do now is we’re going to play the two notes together at the same time but now with our first finger we’re going to hold it right here and we’re going to hold this two strings down at the same time. We’re still pinching with our hand between our thumb and our first finger those two middle strings. So the trick is to keep playing the same two middle strings and now with our first finger, we’re just going to slide up to the different frets while holding down these two same strings at the same time.
So let’s play the same two strings open, that’s our first part here. We play these two strings open then with our first finger, we hold down in the middle of the fret and we pluck those two notes together. Now, it might take a couple times for you guys actually get the feel of putting your finger in the middle of the fret and holding them down at the same time but just keep practicing. So what we’re going to do is we’re going to take our first finger apply a little pressure right in the middle of the string, played on our finger tip and holding those two strings down and plucking them at the same time with our thumb and our first finger. So I did the first two strings open, open 3 then we slide up to our 5th fret and play the two notes together. Let’s review, open 3, 5, part two, open ,3 and look to your 6th fret now with your first finger, 6, 5. Part three, open, 3,5, part four, 3, open. Let’s do that one more time for you guys. Open, 3, 5, part two, open, 3, 6, 5. Part three, open , 3,5, part four, 3, open. And you just let that ring.
Now I’ll go on and play it again for you, here we go. Open, 3, 5, Open 3, 6, 5, open 3, 5, 3, open. What we want to do is just look at the same pattern we played, but now when we come back to the 5th fret and the 6th fret, we’re going to use our 3rd finger instead of what we were just doing in learning that really easy by using our first finger. Let’s just switch over to our 3rd finger and we’re going to hold down the same two strings in the middle the G and the D string. So let’s try this again real slow and I’ll show you what I mean. Let’s do part one, open fret 3 with our first finger. Now with the 5th fret, we’re going to move up using in our 3rd finger. See what I just did? I just did open, 3,5 but now your using our 3rd finger, one more time. Now part two will be similar, we’ll say it open, 3 with our first finger now we’ll come up to our 6th fret using in our 3rd finger 6, and this is the fun part we just slide down from 6th to 5 using our 3rd finger. You see how that works 6,5. So let’s hit part one and part two together, open, 3, 5 using the 3rd finger, open 3, 6 5. Now part three, open 3, 5, 5th fret using our 3rd finger then part 4, you just go back to our first finger, 3rd fret open, cool! Now I’ll just let them play for you again. Open, 3, 5 open 3, 6, 5, open 3, 5, 3 open.
