Hey, this is Gerald of Learning Guitar Now, in this little lesson I’m gonna show you about the Dwayne Almond guitar style, just a little couple unique aspects of what makes his slide guitar playing so special. So this is gonna be in the key of D, a lot of his licks can be used between the 10th and the 8th fret, if you’re playing in the key of D. Key of D, 10th fret all the way across, 8, 10. You know, all the way across, you got 8th fret and 10th fret, that’s kind of a lot of his licks come directly from that but then you have all the, one of the big things that Dwayne Almond uses in his slide guitar playing is a, notes that don’t occur anywhere, but what you can do with the slide. So you can't play 10, 10th fret and then 9.4, you know, unless you bend it slightly with your finger, but, that’s what makes a slide guitar so special and unique. And that’s why Dwayne Almond did in his playing, he’s gonna go between the 10th and the 9th and the 8th fret, a lot of this different strings to produce, you know, sounds like this. And there’s really not any fret that you know, it’s in between a lot of the notes are just hidden in between the notes, so you got like 10, and then he’ll slide backward, and then just hit the G sharp string right after that. Makes it sound like that there’s a lot of soul happening in something like that, so I’m just going 10, slide back. It’s kinda like 9, 9.5, and the 8, 8 and a half, it is really no fret involve, you’re hitting it. You’ve always been told, you’re suppose to play right on top of the frets, that’s not, you know, have to all the time. You don’t have to do anything, there’s no rules in guitar playing, there’s just a common guideline to make you sound better, but if you follow Dwayne Almond’s style you’re gonna notice his playing go in between, in between frets and not really fret associated with it, so it’s, in between 8, 9, and 10. And that’s, that’s a cool thing to mess around with. I’m also doing the backward slide. That’s sliding backwards to 8th fret. We’ll do that really slow slide like that. All those kind of, you know, Dwayne Almond style licks, so you’re going the high E string. You hear him doing that kind of stuff a lot, even this, just hitting that one note, 9, in between 9 and 10. So really, you got 8th, 9th, and 10th fret all available, just depends on how you play it, you just have to, and it sounds really, kind of a snaky sound, you know, sliding back and forth. Just hard to do it slow, because it just sounds bad unless you just play the lick, so you just kinda go in between. And you’re just kinda bouncing. Another he likes to do is on those is a string skip, then you’ll hit the G sharp string on the 10, and you’re gonna, you know, hit the bottom one and then maybe hit it on the 9th fret. And you have that backward slide like that. So that’s a little bit about Dwayne Almonds style, you know, not concentrating on the exact notes but just trying to feel it, you know, I’m just gonna play anything, I’ll improvise it. Real snaky sounding, the sound you can get with a slide guitar. So that’s a little bit about Dwayne Almond’s style, you know, focusing on a, notes in between the frets, and just kinda not even thinking about it, you know, just trying, start feeling it, just slide the note and end up anywhere, 8th, 9th, or 10th fret. So that is all that is for this lesson, check out Dwayne Almond, see if you can listen for those notes in between frets, and I’ll see you next time.
