Here we are with the catchers; we are going to talk about throwing mechanics and throwing to second base, one of the hardest things to practice. What we start off doing is we give the catcher the ball to start with, so we don't have to worry about receiving or any of that kind of thing. We give him the ball; let him work on his footwork and his shoulder turn. So usually we have them do a couple of those and then we have them release the ball a couple of times to the second base, just to get comfortable.
So we will start off that way. All I wanted to do is stand here, put the glove and work on pushing the glove back to your throwing hand and turning your feet and get in a good position. Okay, you are not going to throw right now. Here we go real quick. Crouch, ready, push the glove back, go, just like that. Okay, ready, go quickly right there, okay, one more time; keep your back straight, good right there.
Okay, now you are going to go through and make the throw. Same position right there, come right through, and let the ball go to second base. Good glove work, push the glove back. Good, okay, we have another one right here. Here we go, and one more time just to make sure we have it all. Good, good job right there. That's the first drill we do when we start to teach catchers how to throw.
