Karen: Hey Dr. Oz I am Karen and I am 28 years old. I go out occasionally drinking with my girlfriends maybe two times a week and when I do it, if I have one, too many glasses of wine, I tend to get a pretty nasty hangover. Dr Oz is there anything I can do to cure those hangovers?
Dr. Oz: Well, there are a lot things that you can do. Let's just start from the night before. You never really want to have alcohol without water next to you. You need the water to flush it through your system that's pretty simple, but the alcohol you drink should be the color of water ideally as well. So things like Gin and vodka give you less hangovers than brandy and some of the darker alcohols. The reason for that is what gives you the hangover is called Congeners and the liver got to clear that out. Darker alcohols have more of it in them. So drink light colored alcohols, with a glass of water with them and try to get it with some calories, if you can because it actually help your body absorb it.
Now the next morning, when you have got a problem, a solution that probably works pretty well and there are good reasons for it are number one, take some food in your stomach, but in particular, eggs are effective because the eggs and their yolk have something called N-Acetyl Cyteine, it is a long word, but it really is, is a way of giving your body antioxidants and those antioxidants are critically important to your liver that's going to battle right now, trying to cleanse all the junk in your body.
Oprah Winfrey: Yeah.
Dr. Oz: Now the other thing, that works pretty effective by the way is, if you take something like an aspirin, although it can cause stomach irritation it's very effective in dealing with the inflammation of the hangover and then believe or not, coffee is pretty effective because alcohol is depressant, alcohols takes you down. People sleep at night, they think because, when they drink alcohol, but they don't sleep well. It just gets them into some sleepy period and they start to get depressed all night long. Coffee is a stimulant. So it's gets you going again in the morning.
Oprah Winfrey: Well, that's why at all my parties, did you notice at the New Jersey party when you went back to your room there was aspirin on the bed and there was like Alcoseltzer on the bed and a bottle of water.
Dr. Oz: It was so late when we got home. The sun was coming up over the horizon.
Oprah Winfrey: Well after all my parties, that's what I do for people because if you take the aspirin and the water before you go to bed you don't have the hangover.
Dr. Oz: Yes that's a very good point. Take it at night before you to go bed, it's much more effective, because it is your liver that's causing the symptoms for you.
Oprah Winfrey: Yeah, we will be right back.
