Hey guys! Chris again from classicvwbugs.com and I've got a short tip for you today. And what we're doing is that we're working on a 1954 bug here and we just got it back from the paint booth.
And one thing I want to talk to you about is running boards again of course and when you get you Corvette from the paint booth and you have it, got it like we do, a lot of times the holes where the running boards mount into, the threads are along the rocker, they paint in the booth and the paint then gets inside those holes and it's real hard for you to mount that six millimeter threaded bolt into the rocker for fastening the running board down.
I see a lot of guys that force their way and I was victim of that where I would have mounted the running board on and I start screwing in the bolt and sure enough, it's getting tighter and tighter and what happens, is bolt breaks and then you get a broken bolt inside that rocker and that's terrible. Then you go to join it, and then re-tap it.
So what I do is before hand, I get myself a tap, something like this, I don't know if you can see that. You can get it from the hardware store. These are good for like if you know have a broken bolt in there, where you have to drill a small drill bit through the head -- the broken bolt and then you would use this tap to make new threads, but before you can get to that point, just use the tap to start to thread and cut them open, so you get the paint out of there and then the bolt should go in just fine.
This is one of those bolts that go in for the rockers are 10 millimeter bolts with six millimeter threads. So what I basically do is find a hole, see this one right here, and then you just start turning it. By the way these tools come with handles on them, so you can just start twisting and turning it, just like that. So you cut them through and you pull it back out. I screw it back on and now you have threads cut inside the rocker.
Then you should be good. Just a little tech tip there, just lot of times, if you buy or if you paint your car and you've have the car, got it like we do, that got paint over those holes on the rockers. You just going to want to clear them out and that's it. Alright, that's quick tip for today and if you have any questions, email me at chris@ClassicVWBugs.com and that's it. Take care.
