One of the important ways to really make a spinning plan work is to track expenses. In my life I just cannot manage money very well unless I know where I’m spending the money. It’s a key element in anybody’s plan, in anybody’s budget and there’s some very simple things that we can do when we track expenses.
One is you want to keep track of the expenses by category, that is you want to separate your housing costs and your automobile costs, your miscellaneous costs. Maybe eating out, maybe that’s a big expense and it is for a lot of people. So we want to track expenses by category. A very simple way to do that is simply by keeping track of on paper. Maybe purchase one of those very small little notebooks that has spiral at the top that fits in your shirt pocket. It fits in your purse very easily. You know in each page you would simply write down a category housing or transportation or miscellaneous or whatever the case maybe and then when you go to the grocery store you write down whatever the expense is.
When you check out, if you go out to eat you write down that expense and the respect to own the respective page of your little notebook and then you keep track of spending according to the area in which you’re spending. See one of the big mistake people make is they make a decision or they choose to spin in amount in a certain area. Let’s say somebody really wants to plan to spend $200.00 a month eating out but they don’t keep track of that’s spending eating out so they don’t know whether or not they actually spend the 200 or less or more.
So the decision to spend in an area is not validated by actually keeping track at the expense. My wife and I use a very simple technique. We simply keep receipts so anything that we spend whether we go out and get a hamburger or we go to the grocery store or whatever the case maybe we simply keep the receipt and then at the end of the day or every other day or so we put this receipt right next to our computer and we record the receipts in a software program on the computer. We use a computer, some people use manual methods. Some people just use a blank sheet of paper. Some people use online products. Crown offers all three. We offer the forms to keep track of it individually, manually. We offer software program. We offer online money tracking programs.
So regardless of the technique that you use the key is to keep track of your expenses as you spend that money in the respective category so you know and validate whether or not you’re really spending what you choose to spin in a particular area.
