The person who made the comment is absolutely right. The egg crate is used to adjust the angle of the light coming out, being that the fluorescent bulbs are omnidirectional.

The egg crate's job isn't really for ND. It's to cut light spill, so even though it's a big, broad, soft, flattering light, it's actually directional. If you're lighting in a dark room, the egg crate stops the spill onto the ceiling and the walls and ensures most of the light goes over the subject. But it's a lovely lamp with or without the egg crate. Great for lighting people against windows.
