Male Speaker: Many of my friends have night guards with their dentist to cure them. And what is the night guard? I don't know what is that? I don't know.
Doctor: A night guard is an acrylic appliance that protects the surface of the teeth. It also acts to deprogram the musculature. Very often, if I have a patient that's complaining of headaches that they wake up and their jaws sore stiff. And after I take a look outside and see that the muscles are actually tendered and the teeth sometimes will have signs as well of winding or clinching. I'll normally suggest a night guard.
Male Speaker: Okay.
Doctor: What a night guard does? Not only does it protect the teeth from the severe forces of contraction of the jaw, but it also deprograms the muscle. For example, if I would ask you to do a norm curl with a bar bell and if it were a heavy weight, you want to bring it up to here and you have maximum force when you hope you curl in. But if I had your arms straight, its much harder that's why you see people kind of get the momentum to bring it up.
Host: Okay.
Doctor: A night guard does a similar thing where it keeps the jaws open a little bit and so it deprograms the musculature, so that you're not going to grind and crunch your teeth.
Host: So, would you recommend a night guard for me, as it for generally at of good health for everyone. I want to just in particular people.
Doctor: Just particular people. People who have correction, what we call myophasial pain in this function, meaning soreness of the jaw or joint and soreness in the musculature because of clinching or grinding. Not much we can do, if you're grinding and clinching throughout the day at work. I don't know if you want to work as a night guard. That's right, its stretch related.
