How to use REVIT MEP 2008 - Using Sketchup Skippy Files

Hello and welcome back to our CAD clip lessons on the Massing Objects and this is just an extra little bonus lesson on how we can use sketch up or SKP files in Revit and coordinate with that our great building maker tools over here. So what I am going to do is I am going to import an SKP sketch up file. But I am going to import it into a family that is of category mass. So this is a critical that we start this, this way. So what I am going to do, is I am going to either go model and create and create a new family of category mass or I can simply say create mass and I can call this SKPBLDG type of thing a SKP or sketch up building whatever I want to name it. Hit okay, now I am in the family editor and while I am in the family editor, this is strange it but true. What you do now is you import the SKP file right inside the family editor here. Watch what happens. We are going to go up here and go file. Import CAD format, okay. I am going to navigate in Revit to the training files and I am going to specify SKP files down here. And I am going to common and then there is a file called buildings.SKP that comes with Revit. I am going to say place it center to center and put it on level one, make it black and white. I can preserve the colors I suppose if I want and layers all auto detect the units. Everything is good. Hit open and it brings in that sketch up file into my family editor. Okay there it is. That is just the imported SKP sketch up file and anyone who has used sketch up, knows how quickly you can mass out something like this. And then I can say finish the mass. That is all I did and it is going to give me a warning and say mass contains only mesh geometry which cannot to be used to compute floor area faces, volume or surface area. Okay so I can use my building maker. I will not be able to use the floor by face but that is okay, just a warning. Now that I have that imported into that mass family, okay, I can just go down here and start adding some surfaces so I can say okay. Curtain system by face, I can go say okay. There is a curtain system here. Now do I want include this and them maybe shift minimal mouse button, over to here, there, there, that is good for that building. I say create system, creates a curtain system on there. I can always click on that and change that to be a different curtain system which I will do here. I will say okay. Now I want a 5x10 okay. I am going to pick on here. I am going to pick on that surface. Okay this was an imported sketch up file. Pick on some surfaces, work my way around that building. I do not have to do them all. I am not going to do them all in this example but you can just see how quickly we can create those curtain systems. Around we go and create the system, adds those in. Now I will add the roof, maybe add some walls in there. Okay I can go around. Now this is a different curtain system from this. It does not matter we can go in here and say edit, duplicate, make a new one and change some properties. We do not have to just use what is limited. Now I will say roof by face, here, here and here and then create the roof okay. I am going to create that one there. I am going to go create this one here, here, here, create the roof okay. Now I can turn off my mass objects and I am left with just the curtain systems etc. that are in there. I can see and still need some more materials, so I am going to go back to here and say okay, I need to create a new curtain system or maybe I will use a wall by face instead. Make that into a wall. Okay maybe I need to do roof by face. I need to create a roof out of that and create the roof. Turn my mass elements off. What do I have okay, everything is good. I have no roof on this part. Go back turn my mass elements on again. And I will go and say roof by face and I will say roof here, roof here, and here, here, create the roof. Now I can turn my 3D objects off. You can see I can start to develop that very quickly. Go back to my next one. Maybe I am going to use just regular walls. Wall by face, maybe I will use a four inch brick wall. Four inch brick sloping not such a good idea but we can do it. Walls, we do not have to make walls. We just basically go around and click the same as roof, roof. Roof, we do need to say create roof. Roof, roof, roof, create roof. Okay, turn our mass elements off. You can see how very quickly we can import a sketch up SKP file into our mass categorized family and then we can use our great building maker tools to skin around that SKP file.
