From Toronto - Commonly used anti-depressant medications may help those with Alzheimer's disease. SSRIs were just as effective as a commonly used antipsychotic medication in treating agitation and aggressive behavior in people with Alzheimer's, but without the severe side-effects. Nearly 90% of those with Alzheimer's will experience psychosis at some point.
From Coventry - The effect of beauty sleep maybe more than just skin deep. A study shows that women who slept five hours or less were twice as likely to develop high blood pressure as women who slept seven or more hours per night. No difference was noted in men.
From Baltimore - A study of over 300 doctors shows that many do not know how vitamins are regulated in the US. One out of three doctors didn't realize that quality of vitamins is not regularly evaluated, and nearly 60% didn't realize that they were supposed to report adverse effects to the FDA.
And finally from Texas - A superbug that is normally seen in hospitals is now becoming more prevalent in the community. Community acquired Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus, or CA-MRSA, is becoming a problem in healthy people, especially children. The bug can cause skin infections and boils. Prevention includes frequent hand washing with soap, keeping cuts covered until a scab is formed and not sharing towels or razors.
