Hello! Welcome to the second in the series of Scratch tutorials from AdobeNicNacs.tk
In this tutorial I’m going to cover the basic interface of Scratch. So when you up Scratch this is what you’ll see. Now there’s a couple of main areas we’ll we need to go over. And the first of these is the stage, now the stage is what the player of your game will see and the games run. So if I put full screen mode here, this is what they’ll see. Now on your stage, you can put all your characters or the information or the levels, everything about this will go to stage.
Now in the middle of stage here is a cat, and this cat I will just put default when you open up scratch. Now this cat is a character in the game. You can have many different characters and I’ll show you how to make characters in a bit, but basically, a character in your game is called a sprite is used all the time. Now sprites are used all the time in programming, import for programming, professional programming and even in basic programming like this.
So you can just think of sprite as characters, now another main area is the code area. So in this is where you are going to put your code, but I instead of typing your code, what you do is you drag out blocks. Now you go to your code blocks up here, this at different taps with different types of code it’s all color coded. So it’s very easy to use, you just drag them out, click and drag and connect to the blocks. So it’s very simple to use.
Now all of your sprites have what we call costumes and you can fix this just like costumes in real life. But it’s actually changing the body as opposed to outing on clothes. So you can see here the first costume is the cat like this, when we go to a second costume it’s changed his body. So instead of it, just being costumes it can be physically changing it’s body when it fact disappear it altogether.
We could clear this, or in fact draw a smiley face, but I’m not going to do that, but you get the idea. If you have a tab it’s the sounds tab, you can import sounds, so maybe if you had a gun you can have a gun which will sound which can cool using code and play that sound. Now when this cat opens up, it has a default sound which is a meow, now I’ll just play this but as I’m using headset you won ‘t hear it. So I’ll go back to t his group area.
Okay, that’s pretty much the basic interface of Scratch. In the next tutorial I’m going over all the different code and types and then after that we’re going to make a game. I hope you’ve enjoyed this tutorial and if you like using Adobe products or Scratch, I assume you’ve already started using Scratch and you’ve learned some. Check out my site at www.AdobeNicNacs.tk.
