HOW TO USE A PEEL PATCH
A peel patch is often used on small holes and can be a very fast technique to implement.
To use a peel patch there are several materials and tools that will be needed. The materials that will be needed are: piece of dry walls several inches larger than the hole that’s going to be patched, and 45 minute drywall mud. The tools needed are: six inch and the 12 inch taping knife, a drywall saw, a pencil, a square, a wet rag and the drywall utility knife.
In order to place the peel patch into the hole, it must be cut to the shape of a rectangle. Use the drywall saw to do this. Next, with the straight edge and the pencil draw the rough size of the hole on the back side of the drywall patch. The backside will be recognize the ball when the paper’s darker, thinner, rougher appearance compared to it’s lighter, smoother and thicker from side. Now, take the utility knife and using the drawing as a guide square the backside of the drywall. The patch should have at least an inch to an inch and a half of paper left on all sides of its center. Now, carefully break the scored edge of the patch peeling the gypsum off the back the paper. If the patch is not thick correctly then trim down the patch little by little until it fits.
Now, remove the patch and set it aside. Next, mix up drywall mud to complete the first coat; place the mud into the hole so that the outer edges of the hole are well battered, working the mud so that it adheres to the existing wall. It maybe difficult at first to get the mud to stick because of the drywall dust, but once some moisture work into the dust the mud will adhere. Now, mud the other edges of the patch as well, place the patch into the hole , cover the entire patch and paper with drywall mud, and continue to work the mud into the wall, scraping off any excess mud that maybe left on the wall surrounding patch. Take more mud and apply it to the edges of the patch continually working, adhering and smoothing the patch to the wall. Continue doing this until the patch is nice and even.
Once the first coat of drywall mud sets, but usually takes about 45 minutes, apply a second coat with the 12inch taping knife to ensure flat surface. Once the second coat sets apply the third and final coat. Even notice patch has been out with the 12inch taping knife it will leave behind an edge which will show when the patch is finished if the patch is not feathered into the existing wall, to do this take a wet rag and totally rub the entire perimeter of the patch including the front blending the edge of the new patch with the existing wall texture.
Feathering creates the smooth transition between the patch and the wall. A wet rag is used to do this and dissolves the drywall surface and place the sanding it away with the sanding buck which gets drywall dust all over the room, and destroy original wall texture. The new patch should be even with the existing wall, and appear to be nice and smooth. Now the patch can be textured to match the previous wall texture.
Finally, the drywall to be primed and painted, and then the project is complete. To learn how to properly apply texture, visit the textured section on this DVD thru the main menu or press the enter bottom now on your remote control.
