Hello everyone and welcome to another episode of BluePhoenix.tv. Please excuse my very monotone voice but it is 6:26 am as you may see up here in the top right end corner of this screen cast. Today we are going to be talking about how to use apt-get to install applications within the Linux environment.
So, you go into applications and accessories. You can open up Terminal. Now, one good thing to do when you are in Terminal is get use to this in the sudo command. Now, the sudo command will allow you to run something as an administrator, kind of like to do in Windows when you right click on a program and run it as administrator. So in this example we are going to type sudo apt-get. We are going to install smb which is Samba. Samba is the networking protocol that allows a Windows machine and a Linux machine to talk to each other. So, go ahead and ENTER, it will ask you for your password for Linux. So just type in your password and then in this case you could not find the smb package probably because it is named Samba, just like it sounded. Now it shows that they are duly upgraded packages or packages that need to be upgraded along with one that needs to be installed. So in this case we are going to hit the Yes to continue or Y and hit in there. It is going to download those updates from an archive, either from Ubuntu.com or wherever else they are archived. And once it is downloaded those updates, it is going to install them.
And the real cool thing about apt-get is there is a lot of different programs out there and you can actually search for the programs with apt-get and we will get into that into another video but apt-get is a basically aperture which is not really the real name of apt-get is aperture which is a basically is a package manager that will install and uninstall programs from your computer.
So in the case of this I wanted to remove something. I could type sudo, apt-get, remove samba and there you go. Zero to be removed because there was nothing installed because it failed to install before because there was 404 not found. Reason there probably was the 404’s because the program that I am trying to install is on an older version of Linux. I believe this is 7.10 and I need to upgrade to 8.4. But it is in the virtual machine and does the job for what it needed to do. Also, just to let you know there are some – inside of apt-get. So you can type apt-get, new, and now show you the little picture of a cow, it is pretty funny. And it says, “have you mooed today?” Anyway like I said, just -- apt-get, it is pretty cool, does allow you to do a bunch of different things as far as I am installing it in and installing programs within the Linux environment.
