Welcome to Home made English. On to days class we are going to talk about phrasal verbs or multi word verbs. These are verbs where you take a normal verb and you mix it with a preposition and it gets a whole new verbal meaning. Very difficult to learn for most people so we are just going to take a look at four today with the word put.
The first one is put up, we use this when we are talking about hanging something like a pitcher. Put up a pitcher in the bedroom for example. Next we have put on, put on is for clothing, put on a hat, put on a jacket, put on a jacket before you go outside because it is very cold. Next we have put away, put away is used to talk about organizing things. Put away your books if you are doing the dishes make sure to put them away.
Finally put down, put down is use to insult. John put down his sister and made her feel bad. He insulted her, so let us look at him again very quickly. Put up is to hang, put on is for clothing, put on a jacket. Put away is for organizing things, put away your books. Put down is use to insult, put down someone.
