Hey! How are you guys doing out there? I am Brev Sullivan, Guitars for Featured on Fridays. I am in the studio today working on some new tracks, and I have got my brand new guitar wheel. And, I am going to write a song using my guitar wheel today, so let us check it out.
Alright, I am ready to record my song now and I will get in the studio. I have got my guitar ready to go, I have got my session opened. And, what is different about today is I have my guitar wheel, and I am going to pretend I did not know anything about music other than maybe a couple of chords. And, I have heard people saying all the time, well, you got to know theory, well, I am going to use my guitar wheel and see how far we can get. I have got the key of C here in the window, and if I look over here at major chords, it says C, E, G. So, I am going to play those notes on the guitar and I am going to do it really quick and see how it sounds. Here we go.
[Demonstration]
All right, so we flip down the chords C, E, G, kind of like a nice little jam, and I am going to go back and play over that.
[Demonstration]
Alright, it is cool, it is more like a jam. It is not really a song, but let us go back to our guitar wheels and see what we can find. Well, I see some minor chords. I could use A, C, E. That is right here at the top, major chords in the green, minor chords in the red, so let us try A, C, E.
[Demonstration]
Alright, kind of change with the sound up a little bit, and we are actually getting to a point now where instead of just a jam at one chord, and so many guys out there may already know a couple of chords. We are getting to what you call the songwriting process. The song has to start-off somewhere and go somewhere else. In this case, it is just a guitar instrumental but I want you to sing over this.
[Demonstration]
I am just coming up with these ideas at the top of my head but it is starting to sound a little more melodic. We are not done yet, now we have major chords, we have minor chords. And, that is just scratching the surface, remember this is like the songwriters’, teachers’, musician’s companion. That means everything you would need in your guitar case are here. In this case, we just are in the studio doing a songwriting. We will look at minor version that says A, C, E.
Well, we already did that, we already had a minor version, but what will happen if I look over here in my got diatonic triad. It sounds complicated but all these great chords are right here. I have C, G, C, E, G, C which is a nice chord up here in the 8th fret, I also see at C over here at F chord, so now we go back and do some more jamming, and maybe play another chord entire of this, so like this.
[Demonstration]
Well, that is going to be it for today’s guitar wheels songwriting session. I hope you guys get a chance to head over guitarwheel.com and check out the guitar wheel for yourself, and help you with writing your songs. I am Brevs Sullivan, thanks a lot for having us part of this video, take care.
