Female 1 Speaking of exciting work, one of the best parts of being a Google Engineer, is our famous 20% rule. All engineers at Google get 20% of their time to work at their own projects. So, what kinds of things do engineers in Google do with their 20% time?
Female 2 I and my group of friends recently decided that we wanted to work on a project with other women, so that we could go, we hold the brain storming session with about 15 women where we discussed all of our product ideas.
Male My 20% project was to create a rotating globe that shows the where in the world Google user are searching from.
Female 3 We introduce the feature on Google.com where you can type in a name of the movie and a zip code and it will return to you a list of theaters around that area or along with show times, movie information and reviews.
Female 1 To further stimulate our minds, we have an ongoing series of educational talks. We call them tech talks. And they range in topics from the engineering problems to the latest theories about the origin of the universe. Of course, we Googlers do not just have big appetites for knowledge. Appetite around here can also lead to something we called it dreaded Google 15.
Female 4: The Google 15 is the 15 pounds that you gain with all of the amazing free snacks and organic foods that they provide for us here.
Female: Right, although, if you do over indulge, there are always plenty of opportunities to work it off.
As you can see, balancing life and work is very important to us here ate Google. For all the moms and dads that we have, Google’s new childcare center just maybe one of its most valuable programs. One of Google’s parents is Leor Wiseman, a software engineer and mom to two kids.
Female 5: I had a baby about eight months ago, it was really convenient to have some time off before and 12 weeks after, I got take out right after the delivery for two weeks from my whole family. We had dissentious fellows and we have like 75% pay for the whole 12 weeks, which is really convenient and then coming back. There was a mother’s room that I could pump milk and take care of other stuffs that I have to take care of.
Female: Sounds like that was really great. Has it also been helpful to have flexible hours?
Female 5: Yes, it is definitely helpful when I got back and especially just to work this hours everyday at work and do the best that I have to do at home after I spent time with my baby and she is in bed.
Female So Leor, you came to Google from a small start up company? Google is getting to be pretty big these days, does is still have that small company field to it?
Female 5: Yes, absolutely, you get to up an interesting projects which do not take ages to launch and you get to work with really cool people who are very smart and really interested on what they are doing and you know I just this start up feeling of getting products out, which is really exciting.
Female: That is really one of the core ideas to working at Google. Ambitious ideas, fast responses, big achievements and that is one of the key things that we look for when we were interviewing candidates. As a Vice President of engineering, Allen use to us has been involved in interviewing a lot of his candidates.
Male 2 It is a sort of requirement to come from the top engineering school. What is the requirement is that you be passionate about what you are doing, you have a really high energy level, you understand the products base, you want to build great things and you have a commitment to the kinds of great engineering that I think Google is famous for.
Female: You know, a lot of Google’s culture, its philosophy, its personality come from its founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Sergey asked to be in this video. So I think it is only fitting that we give him the last part .
Sergey: I was a software engineer coming out of computer science department Stanford and we built the place in the way that we liked and as a result, I think we have a great environment for software engineers at home. It is incredible in terms of a scale, hundreds of millions of users that we have. Finally, I will add an addition tools, sort of the size of the ambition that technically interesting problems. To me, it is very fun to work on dealing with all the national language issues, we have some of the most challenging AI tips for a problems in the world. We also have incredibly challenging systems problems because of the scale that we work out, because of the efficiency that we need out of our machines.
Female: Okay, so I have one last burning question. Tell me what kind of shoes you are wearing today.
Sergey These are my Z coils. They are my shoes that have a little bit of extra spring on them and there are sort of high heels for men and so, they exenterate my cabs nicely. Is it not beautiful?
Female: What can I say? Google really has a pretty cool place to work, but do not take it from us. Take sometime to find out for your self what life here is really like. Thanks for joining us.
