On this episode of TakeItApart.net we will disassemble a PS2. In order to begin disassembly you will need to remove the network adaptor if one is installed. In order to do this, you must unscrew two large flat head screws on the back and pull. Now, flip it over and remove all the way past the bottom. You can do this with a flat head screwdriver by wedging it in the side. For the screws on the bottom of the unit, use a medium sized Philips bit. Once all the screws are removed flip it back over and lift up on the top half of the case in the back and slide it forward. Be careful not to damage the front of the console especially the reset button. There are numerous screws around the heat sink that can be unscrewed to allow access to the other components. Once removed, pull off the controller and memory card port but be careful as it is attached by a ribbon. Lay it off to the side. Next, carefully slide out the power plug connector. Now, remove the entire unit from the bottom shelf. Put the main unit over and remove the screws holding the main PCB in place. You can disconnect the power at this time. You can also slide out the metal shield that would house the hard disc drive. You can also disconnect the ribbon cable from the controller memory card area by flipping the little lever up and pulling up. Now, you can also pop off the back where the fan is and slide the back off the fan, leaving the fan connected. You can unscrew the screws that hold the metal heat sink in place. To remove the orange PCB, lift with a steady upward force as there are four prongs holding it in place. Now is also a good time to disconnect the fan and slide off the shield with the green line on it. Unscrew all the screws holding the metal plate in place. There are several. Note the shape of the screws so they can be put back in place later. Now you can disconnect the ribbons, you can see several of them on the side of the unit. Once all the ribbons are disconnected, pop the metal plate off and then lift the PCB exposing the optical drive. That is it.
