Now, imagine to your early rerun at three as the year progresses, as we get better, we will add one more cut to this, and that one cut is screen on the ball. We are going to pass and follow.
Now, there are a couple of factors that we need to talk about here. You can see in this particular group, we have two bigger people and certainly one smaller one. We could have 6’9, and ten. In this case, these young men are around six feet one inch. This young man is around five foot seven. So we really have a perimeter team here, but we are going to assume per principles of filming, this are big people.
What we would like to do with big people has certainly run a power game screening low to the bucket. Well obviously, clear our post, when we go big on big, the pass is made and he follows.
Screen on the ball, this is the important factor. He triple threats up, he sets it long afterward this man has a chance to go at least towards the foul line. We never want to set as high to the acid valley above the foul line, at least towards the foul line.
He needs to make two dribbles at least, before he makes the decision. Too many times young people will square up and make a decision, one bounce throw it. Because it is a drill, we force them to go two bounces. What happens if I am really defending this man, and the sets the pick and there is a switch, if he takes one bounce, we have everyone here, everyone clogged up.
But if he takes two bounces, and drags me and open things up, now we have a good screen and roll situation, we need to take at least two bounces. First, let us keep in mind that we are visualizing that we are playing a game. Even though this is a drill, he has to assume and say in his mind, “I have the chance to beat this man one on one.”
I am going to look to turn the corner. Yes we understand this is the passing game and as follow, I, most coaches do not screen on the ball because it encourages what? It encourages to dribble the ball, and no matter what kind of coach we are, we always say this, “If you want to beat the passing game, make them put the ball on the floor.”
So, it is kind of a twist to a contrary on a rule, in fact that we are going to put it on the floor but we are going to take advantage of a certain situation within the passing game. That situation will be the clear out and a screen and roll on the ball. Many coaches do not take the time, work defensively against the screen, and roll on the ball.
Let us go ahead, screen, and roll on the ball, big to big. Two dribbles, good roll, good pass. Now, if you can see the young man that made the pass, you would have thought he is left handed. He made two good hard dribbles then he switched to the left hand to throw it, the hand nearest to the defender. If we were teaching this, we would say, square up, grow hard to an extend and put the ball all around the defense, because the defense is there. The left hand through his hip will never go.
It looks good in a drill but it will never go on a game. So, when you run your drill, you have to get each individual to say, “Where do I make the pass because there is a defender on me?” even though it does not look like there is. That is a part of visualization of basketball. Always assume that you are being guarded even if you are in a three on zero drill.
Now, we have not been nodding in this kind of situation. We are going to have a small man screening a larger man. He may not have made a great decision but he has made the path and he is going to run to screen and roll. If this happens, we do something slightly different. Instead of rolling him straight to the bucket, most of the time, we would let him set a good pick and belly him back looking for the jump shot.
If he starts to good enough pick, what we have done, we have encouraged a double team or at least for a slight moment, a double team, if that happens and then he will belly back. Now, I could not say that he could not screen and roll and lay in very possible. But, we do know he is a good jump shooter, we do know that might be his best shot especially if there is a weak side help and he is not getting the screening roll, he is not going to get the roll so he looks for the jump shot first. He could also belly, put back if he sees the ball, when he could go to the basket.
He bellied back, he recognizes there is a double switch that they did not take him up when on in for the lay up. Okay, these are the passing game cut; we run them one at a time. The whole team will do the direct cut, the whole team would do a way pit, and the whole team will do the back pit. The whole team would do roll up jump shot. We would go through every option.
