Female: So now we are going on to our trip and it is always really nice to have a nice hot cup of tea and a warm feeling at the end of the day. To have that though, we need to understand the essentials when buying our stove. So once again, we turn to Dick to find out what we need to know when we are going into purchase a camp stove. So could you let us know what we need?
Dick: Okay, first, what I call value and that has to do with how long it takes for the food to heat over any period of time. All right then the efficiency tells you how much fuel you are using during that period of time and then we are also looking at weight and compactness as a unit.
Female: So starting over here, we got something that looks kind of an old.
Dick: It is old. This goes back to the 50s as heavy duty. It is kind of thing you would carry at car camping. Now, over here is a single burner made by the same company, I got this back at the 1960 Olympics and it is still doing fine, but here is a standard mountaineers and backpackers from many years. It is such a good stove. It is still made Brunton name imports and distributes it and again very, very high efficiency with this stove and that something you can set a big pot on stably. Now here, we had something quite different. We have an alcohol stove. Now, we fill that with alcohol, light it and off it goes then you set either one of those pots in here, put this on for a lid and you are cooking.
Female: Can I just ask you a question about this? Alcohol, any alcohol?
Dick: No, isopropyl alcohol. And here, we have another stove which Brunton imports from Sweden. And this one, we light it with a nice Brunton lighter. Off it goes, we open that up, now our flame is totally blue, very, very hot. We set our stove on top of there and that will boil that amount of water which is above up to here in about one minute. But, I am going to turn that down a bit because it is a little bit noisy and not possible at compactness and weight, the whole unit goes into here except for your fuel bottle, total weight of this stove unit is probably six or seven ounces.
Female: That is great. So overall then we have got an acronym that sounds like VEC meaning?
DICK: Value, that is heat delivered to your food, Efficiency which is the amount of fuel it takes during that time and then Compactness and weight.
Female: Great, there we go.
