Speaker: Hi! I am here to talk about how to choose fresh produce. First of all the, I would say that fresh produce speaks for itself, if it's fresh it is going to look and feel crisp. It is going to have good color. You want to avoid bruises and rotting of course. If it's rotting then its probably not as fresh as it could be.
You are also looking for fruit that's ripe, if possible. Often fruit, in particular, is picked before it's completely ripe to avoid it rotting during transport. So it's good to find fruit that isn’t overly ripe, if you are going to keep it for few days. But you also don't want to get stuff that’s not edible. For example, a perfect example, bananas, green bananas I mean are highly indigestible, they are probably pretty fresh they just got pulled off the tree obviously, but you got to have to wait for few days for that green to pass because the sunlight and warmth will help bananas to ripen.
When you are picking greens you want to look for greens that have a little bit of life in them and when and if you cannot find produce, lettuce that is crisp. And all you can find is something that's a little bit limp, you can actually help it out by putting the leaves in a bowl of cold water and that will actually give it a little bit of life. But the idea is to try to find the freshest produce you can to begin with, so that it has a longer shelf life in your refrigerator.
