So, the first thing to think about is, do you really want a dog because, a dog will change your life. There is no two ways about it. You'll have to put up with dog fluff all over the furniture, with dog food in the kitchen and then of course, there are all those walks. You need to be thinking about three or four walks a day possibly, in all weathers, rain or shine. When you go on holiday, you can't just drop everything and disappear. You've got to decide what's going to be happening to the dog? Who is going to look after him? Or where are they are going to a go into kennels. So, there's an awful lot to think about in the process of owning a dog.
How many of you have decided yes I want a dog. Thinking doesn't stop then because you find out which dog is going to be best for you, and you have to decide, first of all, whether its going to be a big dog or a small dog, that's going to be a Pedigree or a mongrel and what I would do, is really just try and think about your lifestyle and what kind of dog suits that best.
So, if you live in a small flat without outdoor space, you really got to be thinking about a terry or a small dog. Whereas if you live somewhere with an enormous garden and loads of fields around, you want an energetic or a big dog, that's going to take you out on lots of walks and things so. I think because we are here in the country, lovely fields just over the road, where are going to think about something quite energetic perhaps a collie or a spaniel a Labrador, something like that, but you really have to choose the breed that suits your lifestyle the best.
Then, once you've decided on a rough size of dog and the type of dog, you have to think about the specifics. If you want a Pedigree dog for example, if your heart is set on a Pedigree, then you need to contact the kennel club. Ask for names and addresses of breeders in your area. Go and meet the breeders, have a look at their breeding dogs and meet some litter and decide if that's what you want to go for. But do some research on specific breeds, because Pedigree dogs can have health problems that are bred into the line, so, research that and try to avoid breeds which have lots of health problems.
If you are happy with a mongrel, then, you have to decide, whether you are going to get a puppy, and perhaps from a friend or someone you hear about in your vet is good place to go, because they know litters or puppies that are coming ready for re-homing.
Perhaps, as I think we are going to do, think about going to a rescue center. So, our plan is to head off in the next week or two, actually, and go to look around some rescue centers, and see if can the ideal dog for our situation nice energetic dog, but someone from a rescue center because I don't think we are ready puppy, we want probably an adult dog. So we will see what happens.
