I'd just electrolyze water... no toxic chlorine,no filter necessary... problem might be in trapping Oxygen,...

yea,i use muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) like from lowe's or pool acid from a pool supply store. works better i think. plus the purer, higher-concentration HCl is more fun anyways

So this is actually pretty good. I would use muriatic acid from the hardware store because itll make purer hydrogen gas, but if you're just messing around making balloons that float away, it prolley doesn't matter how pure it is anyway.

Why are you messing with that when you can get a less dangerous reaction with less dangerous components from using just magnesium and vinegar to produce hydrogen? If you want to experiment, just go get one of those flint strikers and flake some magnesium into vinegar - or even the whole bar.

One point that he didn't make about this project is that the Aluminum foil and hydrochloric acid have to go into a glass bottle rather than a plastic one. The reaction that goes is exothermic and it creates a generous amount of heat that will melt the bottle.
