David Epstein: Welcome to Growing Wisdom and today we are going to talk about Clematis and we will kind of talk about a different type of Clematis that you may not be familiar with. Most of you that have Clematis have the big flat ones and they are come in things like pinks, and purples, and whites, and even some shades of blue. But, there is a different variety, the texensis hybrids and these are really interesting.
And, we are going to show you two today and the first one that we are going to show you is Gravetye Beauty and Gravetye Beauty has this beautiful almost maroony red color and notice how small compared with some of the other Clematis that today is looks like also there is a great bell shaped, they are wonderful and look at the inside of them and you got that little white tiny piece of the flower.
The other one I want you to take a look at is the Pagoda and this is a wonderful light purple that has this amazing center of white and green in the middle and the flowers are just spectacular. This will continue to bloom for quite a long time. You can actually cut them all the way back to the ground in the fall and they will grow all the way back up from the ground to flower again the following spring.
Unlike some of the other Clematis, I want to show you another one. This is a Japanese Introduction fairly new, you may not find this easily at some of your local garden centers but nonetheless take a look, its this beautiful purplely blue. Again, it looks like a little bit of a bell that is called Roguchi and this just a wonderful plant. You can also cut this all the way back to the ground in the fall and they will completely grow back from the ground to flower again on the following spring.
The other interesting thing about these types of Clematis is that they seem to be a little bit less susceptible to wilt. Clematis tends to get wilts. The plant literally starts to wilt and you may think that you are not watering it enough or you are watering it too much. But, it is actually a disease that the plant is getting it can kill them all the way back to the ground, but they can often rejuvenate themselves depending on how bad the wilt is. These varieties typically actually do not get the wilt as easily.
So there are three different plants that maybe you have never heard of that you can try in your garden and they certainly like part sun well-drained soil and you will enjoy them for weeks and weeks during the summer.
