You know, in all the things that I do in the garden probably one of my favorites is planting tomatoes. It is also the thing that I have done the longest. Literally, since I was ten years old my grandfather gave me a packet of tomato seeds and the rest is history. We are going to plant our tomatoes, and tomato planting can occur anytime between the late of April if you are in the middle of Atlantic all the way to the end of May if you are up central portions of Maine.
So, May here in Massachusetts and I am going planting today. I am planting Roman tomatoes, this are my paste tomatoes when I am making sauce later on with these in a few months. We have planted already a dozen other varieties. A couple of things their really easy to grow, you basically you want to dig your hole, I dig it twice as wide as the pot is. That is step one.
Step two. Is that I pop this out nice root ball on this. They have a great root ball, I am going to then mix in some of my compost that I actually made and this is a wonderful compost that I mix in two shovelfuls of this, that goes right in the hole and by the way we have a video on how t make compost if you are interested in that.
We will just sort of stir that around, that gives the tomato a nice area in which to grow and then when I plant it, if it were dry I will fill this hole with some water of plant food or just pure water. If you do not want to use plant food if you cannot find organic plant food, you can just use water or actually physically deep this in the water. It is been very wet the past couple of days, so I am not going to do that. You do not need to if it is wet, the soil is wet and how I want to plant this is I want to plant it up to the first set of true leaves on the plant.
So, unlike most things that you plant this has to be a little bit deeper than you have found it in the pot. It is the one plant that is a little bit unusual, I have always told you do not plant deeper on most things but tomatoes can go actually a little bit deeper. The reason for that, they will send roots out from the sides and ones that is in, I just stick my label in there so that I will not forget what it is and you are good to go.
But, the one last thing I will do is I put a tomato cage around that so as it grows, you can stake it. I like mine nice, and up right and literally in another 60 to 75 days. I am having great tomatoes. We will be having that sauce later on this sauce later on this summer.
