Hi, I am David Epstein welcome to growingwisdom.com and our January gardeners’ calendar and I want to start with house plants. This times of the year a lot of us our trying to just maintain our house plants and gets them through them through the winter. Here is a few things you want to do, one is you want to miss your plants a lot of plants will benefit just for miss things.
Once a day, once every other day it creates a miniature more human environment around there it kind of a little micro climate also if you have created a humidity tray, creating a little bit a human environment around the plant like a fern keep those humidity trees fall. Plants are more susceptible to disease and bugs this time with the year because they are really stress out. They want the light, they want the humidity and the do not have it.
So, turn the leaves over look underneath check for spider mites, check for mealy bugs, and check for scale, check for white fly and if you have any of this bugs. What you want to do is spray them with an insecticidal soap. The other thing is I do not feed my house plants during January I actually give them a rest for that month. The plants are almost are in semi-dormant state many of them if not all of them are not really growing actively this time of the year.
So, you do not need to feed them and finally water them less than you would during the course of the rest of the year. Watering them less because they do not need as much water again because they not actively growing, the other things that is happening is you are getting catalog and this is some catalog which came into fall but you are getting your spring catalog will also becoming into a very nice idea that look through them.
Look at bulbs, look at perennial, look at annual and also seeds check out all of those things. If someone starts seeds it is the nice time of the year to order your seeds because sunrise and sunset are also close together we do not have as much light as much we do during the course of the year. I augment that light with a plant light the other thing can do is if you have a plant in the North or East facing window move it to the South or west facing window.
In terms of trees you want to contact an arborist now why? Because this time of the year during the winter there are slow in terms of amount of the work that they have a lot of them are looking for work. So, if you have a tree that dead is a great time to you to remove think of this way. Your ground is probably frozen they can bring bigger equipment onto your lawn without doing any damage.
The other reason to contact them now is to set-up a spring program or help maintenance program for the spring. So, I have this paper white here which is basically gone by these are kind of crispy at this point and I am ready to discard that. But, what I have done is I started another one just a few weeks ago and this is begun to sprout it is a great little container here and you can see that were probably get this great new blossom to come up. And they will be coming up in just a few weeks and you can also do the same thing with amaryllis.
